Several records broke, many legs shook and few bodies went unbruised by the end of the 2014 California International Marathon. About 15,000 participated in the Sacramento Running Association sponsored event and 50,000 cheered runners on along the downhill course.
For Kathy Schieno December 7, 2014, was a day of firsts. She ran her first marathon.
Using the Nike+ plan to increase mileage and endurance over the six months leading up to the CIM, Kathy was able to keep her pace near 8:30 a mile to finish the race in 3:45, a personal record.
Standing a block away from the capital building under a Mylar emergency blanket Kathy con, “It was a rough year, I wanted to finish it off strong.”
Kathy now waits to see if her official time qualifies her for the Boston Marathon. Entry into the Boston Marathon is dependent on age bracket and finish time.
The Importance of Outdoor Play
On any given school day fifth and sixth grade male students at C. Wenzel Elementary can be found playing an iteration of the game HORSE on the courts. Throughout the day, students are limited to 15 minutes of outdoor time and a 30 minute lunch period. To promote healthy living the National Basketball Association's Sacramento Kings hold many community health events in the south Sacramento area. Some of the students pictured will meet an NBA player, the mascot, Slamson, or a Kings dancer at one of these events.
I was tasked by the school's after school provider with showing what healthy play looks like on an average day.
